The sewers currently serving Quail Street and East Reynolds Road were installed in the 1960s in an area known for poor soil quality and a high water table due to Lake Lansing being nearby. Over the decades, underground peat has compressed and no longer supports the buried sewer pipes properly, which have begun to sag and collect groundwater.

This project will replace the older clay and iron sewers with new plastic pipes specifically designed to resist sagging. The new sewer system will also be supported by a thick layer of gravel and anchored with piers to secure it in place now and well into the future.

On February 21, 2024, residents living on Quail Street and East Reynolds Road were delivered letters informing them of the project.

Before construction could begin, the water table was lowered using dewatering wellpoints drilled along the roadway. This allowed water to be pumped out of the ground and run through sediment filters before ultimately ending up in Lake Lansing. These wells were established during the first two weeks of the project and will be in operation for the duration of the project in order to provide drier working conditions for the contractor’s excavations and sewer installations.

When it is sufficiently dry, work will begin at the County Park Boat Launch and progress West on Quail Street, beyond Milenz Street, and approximately 700 feet into East Reynolds Road, as shown on the map below. After the new sewers are installed, the roadways will be re-paved as part of an ongoing road program.

This project began in February 2024 and will finish by mid-June 2024. The boat launch is expected to re-open by May 1, 2024.

Anticipated Schedule of Construction:

• February — Drill wellpoints and begin dewatering the construction zone.
• Mid-March though April — Heavy Construction begins on the new sewers, starting on Quail Street.
• May — Continued installation of the new sewers beyond Milenz Street into East Reynolds Road.
• June — Restoration of disturbed work sites and start of the road-resurfacing project.

The Ingham County Parks Lake Lansing Boat Launch, located at 6271 E. Lake Drive in Haslett, will open to the public on Wednesday, May 1.

Ingham County typically opens the boat launch in mid-April. The opening of the boat launch was delayed approximately 2 weeks this year due to Meridian Township’s County Park West Sewer Replacement Project.

Unfortunately, the Township can only perform this work in the early spring due to frost laws during the winter months and the necessity of keeping the boat launch open in the late spring and early summer months. This leaves a very narrow window for the Township to complete this project. This project was necessary to replace the failing sections of the original clay and iron sewers.

The Township thanks our contractor for adhering to the May 1 contractual deadline for opening the boat launch. We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience during construction.
