In 2024, Meridian Township was awarded a one-time $480,000 grant through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) in order to help preserve owner-occupied homes and neighborhoods. This grant is a part of MSHDA's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Housing Improving Local Livability (CHILL) Program.

Meridian Township's Homeowner Improvement Project (HIP) will issue grants to income-eligible residents in select areas, which will allow them to make critical repairs that meet code standards, resulting in safer and more secure homes for residents. With support from the grant, residents will be able to stay in their homes for longer and continue to live in Meridian Township.

If residents meet funding requirements, award terms are as follows:

  • Awards of $10,000 or less will be considered a grant to the homeowner with no repayment, mortgage, or mortgage note required.
  • Awards of $10,001 to $40,000 will be considered a zero interest, zero payment loan, forgivable after five years. Loans shall be secured by a second mortgage, in the form of a lien, forgiven in full at the end of five years.

Eligible repair projects include interior and exterior improvements to meet applicable code requirements, such as roof repairs, siding, windows, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and insulation.
