Residents who own property in the drainage district and property contributes storm water to the drain are invited to an informational meeting about the Daniels Drain Project on Thursday, August 26 at 6:00 pm.
As a contributor to the storm water system, your property will be assessed to pay for a portion of the improvements as determined by the Meridian Township Board through a special assessment process.
The drain improvements were requested by a petition to the Ingham County Drain Commissioner on behalf of the residents of the district after several Township Board meetings and public hearings soliciting the opinions of the property owners in the district in 20215 and 2016.
The Township's share of the total $6,796,838 project is $5,536,644. Although the full cost of the project may be assessed to the benefiting property owners, the Township Board has indicated that they will fund 50% of the $5,536,644 from the Township General Fund.
Assessments of the remaining cost ($2,768,322) will be apportioned using the principles of benefits derived. This will involve many factors including size of the parcel, land use type, amount of runoff, unique property characteristics, etc. The special assessment process involves multiple public meetings, two public hearings and direct notices to the impacted property owners. Individual property assessment amounts are determined as part of this process. Upon final approval of the special assessment roll, it is anticipated that the first payment would be due in the summer of 2022.
This meeting will provide information on the history of the project, project plans, construction, schedule and the special assessment process.
