Community Tree Planting Day

In honor of Arbor Day celebrated this year on April 30, volunteers will be planting 205 native trees at the Towar Woods Preserve on Saturday, May 1 at 9:00 am. The trees will be added to a diverse woodlot in a degraded part of the preserve.

Participants must register for all events due to COVID-19 restriction. To register, or for more information, please contact Meridian Township Stewardship Coordinator Emma Campbell at ecampbell@meridian.mi.us or call at 517.853.4614. All workdays are outdoors and may be cancelled due to inclement weather.

Arbor Day was officially proclaimed in 1874 by Nebraska’s Governor, Robert W. Furnas, and the day was observed April 10 that year. In 1885, Arbor Day was named a legal state holiday in Nebraska, and April 22 was selected as the date for its permanent annual observance. Many other states also passed legislation to observe Arbor Day each year. By 1920, more than 45 states and territories were celebrating Arbor Day.
