This workday at the Harris Nature Center (3998 Van Atta Road, Okemos) will focus on the cutting of invasive bittersweet, an extremely aggressive vine that is taking over local forests. It has no growth limit and can even topple giant oak trees! We will also monitor vernal pools in the area for invasive species. We will learn about vernal pools and why they matter! All tools will be provided, and no experience is necessary. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear protective footwear.
Stewardship Saturdays occur every other Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm at a different location. Help the Meridian Conservation Corps restore habitat across our parks and preserves through activities like invasive plant removal and sowing native seeds. Stewardship workdays are a great way to get outdoors and improve our community!
Participants are encouraged to pre-register but walk-ins are welcome. To register, or for more information, please contact Land Stewardship Coordinator Emma Campbell at ecampbell@meridian.mi.us or call at 517.853.4614. All workdays are outdoors and may be cancelled due to inclement weather. If you would like to join the Meridian Conservation Corps to receive email updates on future stewardship events and get free MCC swag, visit the Meridian Conservation Corps webpage to sign up.
