LOCATION UPDATE FOR STEWARDSHIP SATURDAY
- Join us at Tihart Preserve to sow native seeds into this preserve that was once farmland! This area has shown so much resilience and has started sprouting native plants like swamp milkweed, and great blue lobelia. We are helping it move along faster by planting native seeds collected locally, that we think will do well in this area.
- We will be bringing seed from several milkweeds (whorled, swamp, and butterfly weed), as well as some bottlebrush grass, golden alexander and many others! up to 34 different species will be planted - how wonderful that we can implement so much diversity into an area that was only utilized to grow one crop at a time!
- We will also cut away some invasive brush along our planting area to allow more sunlight.
- An address to get you to the entrance is 1113 Tihart Road, Okemos MI (This is a private residence, so please DO NOT pull into the driveway!) You will simply park along the north side of the road where the entrance to the preserve is located.
- We will provide all tools, just please dress appropriately for the cold weather, and bring a trusty pair of work gloves.
Stewardship Saturdays occur every other Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm at a different location. Help the Meridian Conservation Corps restore habitat across our parks and preserves through activities like invasive plant removal and sowing native seeds. Stewardship workdays are a great way to get outdoors and improve our community!
Participants are encouraged to pre-register for all events, but walk-ins are welcome. To register, or for more information, please contact Land Stewardship Coordinator Emma Campbell at ecampbell@meridian.mi.us or call at 517.853.4614. All workdays are outdoors and may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
